Books on film

Teenagers in grades 8 through 12 have a chance to put their filmmaking talents to use for the Ela Area Public Library. The library is running a YouTube video contest, the winner of which will receive a new Flip digital camera. Videos should be one to five minutes long and illustrate why you love the Ela Area Public Library. The contest starts Sunday and runs through Feb. 28. Once you have put your library love on film, post it to YouTube and tag it as "weloveeapl2009." Also send an e-mail to sstrahl@eapl.org with a link to the video.

Students learn about broken hearts

Lake Zurich High School students will get a firsthand look at open-heart surgery from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Feb. 4 at the University Center of Lake County in Grayslake. The anatomy students will watch a live interactive video of the surgery from the Advocate Christ Medical Center. This is the third time Lake Zurich High School students have observed open-heart surgery at the University Center. The Museum of Science and Industry program allows students to take their learning experience to an interactive level outside of the classroom.
