Pella scaling back hours at Ill. plant

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- A second round of layoffs has hit a Pella Corp. plant in Sioux Center in northwest Iowa.

The company says 86 workers have been laid off. Pella spokeswoman Kathy Krafka Harkema says the layoffs were necessary because of the credit crunch, which led to a decreased demand for building materials throughout the country.

In December, Pella laid off 65 employees in Sioux Center.

In addition, Harkema says the company will implement a four-day work week for 3,900 employees in its four Iowa plants, a plant in Macomb, Ill., and one in Fairfield, Ohio.

The company has had 495 employees volunteer to take leaves of absence while it deals with slow times.

Pella manufactures wood, fiberglass and vinyl windows and doors.
