What happens when there are more seats than candidates?

Unlike many races in the Fox Valley, the elections for village president and village trustee in Sleepy Hollow are uncontested.

In fact, Sleepy Hollow has more village board vacancies than candidates.

Incumbent trustees Russell Getz and Donald Ziemba are seeking re-election, but Trustee Todd Prigge declined to run for another term, leaving the village one candidate short for its three open board seats.

Though filing for the April 7 consolidated election ended at the close of business on Monday, Village President Stephen Pickett said potential trustees can still enter the election as a write-in candidate.

"Someone could activate the write-in policy between now and the election," Pickett said, who is running uncontested for a second term. "But I would think that if someone was interested, they would have picked up a packet."

If two names remain after the election, Pickett said he would appoint a trustee with the advice and consent of the village board.

Pickett previously appointed a trustee in 2001, after his election to the village president's post left open his village board seat.
