5 charged in death of baby found in squalid NW Side apartment

Authorities in Chicago have charged five people in the death of a baby boy who was found in a filthy, roach-infested apartment on the city's northwest side.

Chicago Police officer Laura Kubiak says the five adults lived in the same home as 3-month-old Ivan Carlos. Chicago firefighters responding to a call at the Albany Park apartment on Tuesday found the child dead amid scattered food and cockroaches.

Officials say 10 other children were also found in the home. All were taken to the hospital for evaluation and then placed in state custody.

Kubiak says the five people charged range in age from 28 to 60. Each faces between one and seven misdemeanor counts of endangerming the life and health of a child.

An autopsy is planned.
