11 sickened by carbon monoxide leak

Authorities say high carbon monoxide levels caused by a faulty furnace at a Chicago Boys and Girls Club sent 11 teenagers to area hospitals.

Fire Chief Joe Roccasalva says all of the teens are in good condition.

Roccasalva says emergency officials were called Monday night after three boys became sick at an event being hosted by the club. He says medics suspected the three suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The building was evacuated. Roccasalva says about 50 children were at the club for the event.

Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says the carbon monoxide spiked because of a furnace flue that didn't work. He says there wasn't a carbon monoxide detector in the building.

Roccasalva says carbon monoxide levels inside the building are back to normal after the windows and doors were opened.
