Two fires damage homes in Elgin
A fire Saturday night in Elgin left one home uninhabitable, while another fire Sunday morning caused extensive damage to a west side home.
Just before 9 p.m., Saturday, the Elgin fire department was called to a blaze at a home on the 0-100 block of South Aldine Avenue that started in the home's living room. No one was home at the time and the fire caused about $90,000 in damages, said Captain Schmidt. The fire was contained to the first floor, but Schmidt said the house was deemed uninhabitable because of fire and smoke damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Schmidt said.
Meanwhile, almost 13 hours later, firefighters responded to a chimney fire at a home on the 1800 block of Country Knolls Lane, on the city's west side.
Schmidt said the fire caused attic and chimney damage estimated at $8,000. No one was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
