Olivia, Wolverine shows to debut on Nickelodeon

A couple of well-known picture-book characters get new cartoon series this week courtesy of Nickelodeon. First Marvel Comics' Wolverine gets the star treatment, stepping out in front of "Wolverine and the X-Men" debuting at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, on the Nicktoons Network. Then the beloved pig "Olivia" gets her own weekday series at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, on Nickelodeon proper.

Cold-weather rap

Chicago Public Radio and WBEZ 91.5-FM play host to "A Winter Block Party for Chicago's Hip-Hop Arts" at noon Sunday, Jan. 25, at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago. In addition to a live mural painting and various performances, an open-mike event is set for 3 p.m., and at 7 p.m. William "Upski" Wimsatt gives a "State of the Society" report on "Movement-Building in the Age of Obama."

Not your average Joe

The Sundance Channel's monthlong "31 Days of Sundance" festival comes to a powerful peak with the U.S. television premiere of "Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten" at 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26. Julien Temple's documentary profile of the Clash lead singer is a little contrived, especially in a campfire conversation with friends summing up his life, but the power of his performances captured on film is riveting.

Handle this

There's no courtroom scenery left to chew at the end of "A Few Good Men," not with Tom Cruise trying to match Jack Nicholson in a no-holds-barred military interrogation. Good thing Demi Moore is along for the ride to provide just a little eye candy, even in her dress uniform. It's at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, on FX.
