No injuries in Park City apartment fire; space heater may be cause

There were no injuries in an apartment fire in Park City Wednesday morning.

The Gurnee Fire Department responded to a call of smoke and fire in a second-floor unit at 4116 Greenleaf Court in the Park Terrace Apartments at about 9 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it's possible a faulty space heater might have sparked the blaze, Gurnee Fire Department Battalion Chief Barry Henby said.

The heaviest damage was in Apartment 202, but other units may have some smoke and water damage, Henby said. No one was in the apartment when firefighters arrived. Damage was estimated to be around $12,000.

People living in the 36-unit building evacuated quickly and calmly, according to resident Ron Johnson. "The fire alarm is really loud in these buildings," Johnson said. "I saw a lot of black smoke but no flames. The fire department responded very fast."

Henby said all the residents were able to return to their apartments, with the exception of Apartment 202.

This is the second apartment fire this month in Lake County. A fire in the Cook Apartments in downtown Libertyville forced the evacuation of nearly 150 residents on Jan. 7.
