Metallica, Machine Head at the Allstate Arena

Can a speed-rocking metal band survive stints in rehab, a touchy-feely documentary and multiple Grammy nominations to prove it can still move the masses? Metallica answers by checking into the Allstate Arena next week, touring behind its latest album, "Death Magnetic." Machine Head opens.

ESO cheap seats

Friday, Jan. 23, is the last day of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra's bargain sale, with all concert tickets for the rest of the 2008-2009 season priced at $25 a seat. That includes Beethoven's "Pastoral" Sixth Symphony the first weekend in February, Dvorak's "New World Symphony" in March, an all-Mozart program in April and Grieg's Piano Concerto in June.

Rock & 'roll it'

The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs' Ohm Multimedia Series gets rocking this weekend with the Chicago Motion Graphics Festival Screening, which will include works by Nine Inch Nails, David Byrne and Public Enemy rapper Chuck D. NIN's "Ghosts 8" will be one of the featured presentations, along with NASA's "Money."

The Chicago Motion Graphics Screening takes place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, in the Chicago Cultural Center's Claudia Cassidy Theater, 77 E. Randolph St. There will also be an Audio-Visual Performance Showcase at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25.
