Freight train derails near Kankakee County town of Grant Park
Authorities say about 20 cars of a freight train derailed near the small Kankakee County town of Grant Park, about 50 miles south of Chicago.
There were no reports of injuries from Sunday night's derailment, but a number of local residents were evacuated for several hours because two of the derailed cars were tankers carrying denatured alcohol .
Kankakee County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ken McCabe said the evacuees were taken to a local high school. The residents were allowed to return to their homes shortly before midnight.
Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis says the tracks the train was traveling on belong to the company. But he says the freight train was not Union Pacific's.
