Fremd keeps cool, stops Palatine

Host Fremd kept its composure.

Unfortunately for Palatine, the Pirates did not.

The result was a 46-29 Fremd victory in a Mid-Suburban League West Division girls basketball matchup between the crosstown rivals.

"I don't know what they are thinking about," said Pirates coach Leslie Schock. "There seems to be no urgency and no desire to finish the game. We just need to get everyone on the same page."

Across in the Vikings' locker room, things were a bit more cheery.

"We kept our composure when they made the third-quarter run," said Vikings coach David Yates. "To stay in the conference race, you need to keep winning.

Two juniors, Taylor Glassmann and Gianna Abruzzo, did most of the damage for the Vikings (12-6, 4-1). Abruzzo scored 12 points and grabbed 4 rebounds, while Glassman netted 15 points, including four 3-pointers.

"We knew there would be a lot of emotions on the floor," Glassmann said. "I wouldn't mind making four or five 3-point baskets every game. But we had some balanced scoring and it shows that we have a diverse offense. I knew some time in the game that Palatine would make a run."

The Vikings took leads of 13-10 at the quarter break and 28-16 at halftime. Glassmann scored 9 of her 15 points in the second quarter to help build the lead.

The Pirates (3-16, 0-5) engineered a 10-2 run that brought them within 35-28 with 48 seconds left in the third quarter. Katie Nawrot (10 points) sparked the spurt with 8 points. But the Pirates scored only 1 point in the final eight minutes.

"The consistency has not been there," Schock said. "This game, this game kind of sums up our season."
