Antioch gets stuck against Round Lake
Round Lake's girls basketball team allowed Antioch only 3 foul shots in the first quarter and never looked back as the Panthers overwhelmed the host Sequoits 50-33 in a North Suburban Conference Prairie Division game Saturday afternoon.
Antioch also had some bad luck, as their first 2 field goals attempts got stuck between the rim and the backboard.
"I've seen it twice in 29 years (of coaching)," said coach Gary Edge, whose Panthers improved to 15-2 overall and remained undefeated at 7-0 in the NSC-Prairie. "I thought we played well in the first half, but we got a little lackadasical in the second half. But it was certainly it was a game going into that (Antioch) is a pretty decent ball club. We have to do a better job moving our feet defensively and we've got to do a better job rebounding, but overall I am pretty happy."
Even though the Sequoits were down by 20 points, they managed to come back in the fourth quarter and outscore Round Lake 12-9 in the period.
"They kept pressing us towards the end," Edge said. "I'm sure they wanted to up the tempo, but they really never did close the game down."
Antioch fell to 8-9 overall and 3-4 in the division.
"It was a repeat of the last time we played them," said Sequoits coach Tim Borries, whose team fell to Round Lake 49-35 earlier in the season. "They came out and hit some shots, we didn't shoot the ball very well and the score was the outcome of the first quarter."
"We also missed a few layups in the first quarter," Borries said. "But when you're not on, you're not on - and we weren't on today."
"Our girls held Round Lake to 50 points," Borries said. "If you told me that we were going to hold Round Lake to only 50 points, I'll take it every single game. But we have to score more than 50 points and we didn't do that. But I'm very pleased with our hustle today."
Labrenthia Murdock led all scorers with 21 points and had 8 assists.
"I thought we came out and played hard right from the beginning and we transitioned well," Murdock said. "We went over the plays in practice and I just ran the plays and that's how they worked. You have to get a shot every time."
Ashley Miller scored 12 points, and Amber Phillips and Chanee Brown chipped in with 6 points apiece.
Brittany Deem and Allie Anttila each led the Sequoits with 11 points, and Deem forced 7 turnovers.
"We started out alittle slow," Deem said. "We went out in the second half and our job was to get up from our 20 points (deficit). We fought hard."
While her team trailed by as much as 20 points in the fourth quarter, Deem never stopped hustling on defense.
"That's what you have to do if you want to go far," Deem said. "If you want to win, that's what you got to do - give it your all."
