Great Scott! Long shot sparks Lakes

Mike Scott had a big hand in more ways than one for Lakes' basketball team Friday night.

First, Scott concluded the first half by swishing a 75-foot shot to beat the buzzer. He then dished out a number of assists in the second half.

Lakes upended district rival Antioch 70-61 in a North Suburban Prairie Division contest in Lake Villa.

The Eagles (6-10, 4-2) had four players in double figures. John Androus led with 22 points and 15 rebounds, Chris Boehm scored a season-best 17 points, Scott finished with 13, and Tyler Swindle totaled 10 and 11 boards.

"Good intensity. Both teams brought out their best," Lakes coach Brian Phelan said. "Antioch was physical but we responded well. It was ugly, pretty and different."

The Scott shot happened when Antioch (1-12, 1-4) sent a long inbound pass down court. Scott intercepted it and launched it back the other way.

"Antioch had a second left and we were watching for the lob," Scott said. "It was thrown up for grabs and I just got it.

"It was kind of a baseball-throw, a heave of a shot. I was shooting ultimately one-handed. I was like, 'Hey, it might go in,' and it went in. It probably was the highlight of my basketball career."

The 3-pointer capped a 12-5 run and put Lakes up 38-26.

Antioch's Cameron White scored 6 of his career-high 30 points during an 8-2 run early in the third quarter, cutting Lakes' lead to 38-36.

But from there, Scott started distributing the ball to teammates, who knocked down shots.

"Antioch tried to shadow me," said Scott, who took only one outside shot in the third quarter. "We've got plenty of people that can score."

Boehm came off the bench and started a 14-5 run for Lakes by sinking a layup. He finished it with a 3-pointer at the one-minute mark, as the Eagles led 52-41 going into the final quarter.

"I just tried to step things up a bit," Boehm said. "I wasn't trying to be selfish at all. I just took a few shots when I was open. My teammates were finding me and I knocked a couple down."

In the final quarter, Lakes built a 16-point lead and led 64-48 when Boehm made a couple of free throws with 2:48 left.

The Sequoits tried to rally back with a 13-2 run, as White made a layup with 52 seconds remaining and cut the lead to 66-61.

But Lakes closed the door by making 4 straight free throws.

"That's why our team is improving," Antioch coach Michael Skinner said. "A few weeks ago, we would've lost by 25. With this much time left, we're running our stuff and leaving the chips fall where they may.

"Our kids are playing consistently better each game. We're just trying to get a win."

Antioch lost Eric Smith to an ankle injury in the second half and Skinner said the forward might not be available when the Sequoits visit Grant tonight.

Lakes played without center Marcell KirkmanBey, who was out with the flu.
