Kane Co. Sheriff's academy opens in April
Residents of unincorporated Kane County can take a free class in police work this spring through the sheriff's department.
The Citizens Police Academy is a 10-week course on investigations, evidence, patrols and other aspects of county law enforcement. It opens April 1.
"This is just another way we think we can help people and let them know we're here," Lt. Pat Gengler said. "We want to build trust and a bond between us and the community."
Gengler said this is the first time in the department's history that such a program is being offered. It will be similar to those available at several local municipal police agencies, including St. Charles, but with emphasis on some lesser-known functions of the sheriff's office, such as jail operations, SWAT and bomb squads, he said. Participants also will ride along on a patrol.
The initial course is open to 20 people and meets 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays through June 3. Gengler said it's geared toward residents of unincorporated Kane County, but applications will be accepted from anyone 18 or older who lives or works in the area. Convicted felons and people with misdemeanor charges in the last 12 months are not eligible.
Applications are due March 13. For more information, visit kanesheriff.com or call Sgt. John Grimes at (630) 444-1137.
