Firefighter accused of stealing gas meters

A Chicago firefighter has been charged with misconduct after allegedly stealing gas meters from empty homes and reselling them.

Fire department spokesman Larry Langford says 38-year-old Milton Stewart has been with the department for eight years. Stewart has been placed on administrative leave while the fire department conducts its own investigation.

Chicago police say Stewart has been charged with one count of official misconduct, one count of forgery by altering a document and one count of wire fraud.

Stewart is expected to appear in bond court Thursday. It was not immediately clear whether he has an attorney.

A message left at the number listed for Stewart's home address was not immediately returned Thursday.
