Downers Grove teenage dad charged with hurting his baby son

A DuPage County judge ordered a 17-year-old Downers Grove father held Thursday on $500,000 bond on charges of aggravated battery to a child.

Uriel Ortiz is accused of inflicting severe injuries on his 6-month-old son Jan. 11 while watching the child in their home on the 1900 block of Curtiss Drive.

The baby is listed in critical condition at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood with severe head trauma.

"Ultimately, this defendant did confess to law enforcement that he slammed the child against the ceiling," Assistant State's Attorney Michael Pawl said.

The prosecutor said authorities removed ceiling tiles in the defendant's home and they are consistent with the child's skull injuries.

DuPage Associate Judge Brian Diamond set the bond.

Ortiz told the judge he is a Downers Grove South High School student. He is due to appear in court next month before DuPage Circuit Judge Blanche Hill Fawell. A public defender was appointed to represent him.
