Candle sparks Grayslake house fire
A Grayslake teen is lucky to be alive today after waking up Saturday morning to see her bedroom completely engulfed in flames, Grayslake fire officials said.
The 17-year-old girl suffered burns to her arm and hand while trying to escape the fire at 440 Cross Arm Lane at about 9:25 a.m., officials said.
Fire officials said the fire was brought under control within two hours.
The fire allegedly started after the girl left a burning candle unattended in her second-story bedroom.
The teen was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville immediately following the fire, officials said. Her condition today is unknown.
Officials said smoke detectors were in the house but not working. There were no other injuries, however, because the injured girl ran through the house and warned everyone to get out of the home.
She told authorities that the room was engulfed in flames when she woke up.
Officials are still trying to determine a damage assessment of the blaze. The home was deemed uninhabitable by the Grayslake building department.
