Another view on Ryan pardon
Fence Post writer Walt Zlotow's point about George Ryan requires a response. I totally understand his point about our tax dollars, but the best way to maintain control over how our money is spent is in the voting booth by electing candidates that support our value systems. George Ryan was not one of those candidates.
How can Walt say that Ryan is harmless? Stealing from the taxpayers is harmless? Being indirectly responsible for the deaths of 6 children is harmless? Denying any accountability for his actions is harmless? If our elected officials are not held accountable and are allowed to get away with anything they want, what message does that send? Talk about escalating crime; nothing contributes more than the lack of consequences. And since when does age have anything to do with obeying the laws? If Ryan were younger, then I guess Walt feels he should serve his full term. So at what age is it safe to commit crimes without fear of "rotting" in jail? Walt, maybe you feel the opposition to Ryan's pardon is an insignificant issue, but everyone, even the "bunch of hardhearted haters coming out of the woodwork," has a right to an opinion.
I can only say "thank you" to retired Sen. Peter Fitzgerald for nominating our current U.S. Attorney, Patrick Fitzgerald. Everyone knows how corrupt Chicago, and Illinois, is, and until now nothing serious has ever been done to address the problems.
