Naperville mother in custody after house fire

A 28-year-old Naperville mother is in police custody Saturday after firefighters responded to an early morning fire and found three unattended children in her apartment.

Latangie Young, of 120 Testa Drive, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor counts after firefighters responded to a fire shortly after 7 a.m. in her third-floor apartment. Young had left to work at a job in Niles for the day, officials said.

Firefighters found Young's 10-year-old and 7-year-old children, as well as a one-month child in her custody, unsupervised in Young's apartment, officials said. None of the children were hurt, officials said, after the minor fire was set by the 10-year-old child's unsuccessful attempts to make pancakes for breakfast.

The three children were in the custody of a family member, Naperville Police Sgt. Betsy Brantner-Smith said. Brantner-Smith would not disclose the amount of bond set for Young.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has been notified of the incident.
