Caputo's buys shuttered S. Elgin Dominick's

A year after opening its sixth suburban location in South Elgin, Angelo Caputo's Fresh Markets has made a substantial investment in the village.

The owners of Caputo's recently bought the former Dominick's site at the northwest corner of Randall and Silver Glen roads in which they set up shop in December 2007.

"From our perspective, I'm happy to see Caputo's committing to the location," said Steve Super, South Elgin's director of community development.

"We we see a major tenant like that commit to a location that tells us the center is going to be viable in the (next) tough year or two," he added.

According to the Kane County Recorder's Office, the building was purchased by Indiananpolis-based Kite Silver Glen LLC in 2004 for $23.2 million from Orex TMK South Elgin Venture.

On Dec. 31, a deal was finalized by Robertino Presta to buy the 138,000-square-foot shopping center for $20.35 million, according to the recorder's office.

That's about 12 percent less than was paid in 2004.

Sam Fantauzzo, director of operations at the company's corporate office, said the company owners consider their real estate transactions to be private matters.

But Fantauzzo did note that the company prefers to own the buildings where they have stores.

"We do want to be part of the community," he said.

Angelo Caputo's also has locations in Naperville, Hanover Park, Addison, Bloomingdale and Elmwood Park.
