WW South upends West Aurora

West Aurora was coming off an extended break after winning three impressive games en route to the Pontiac Holiday Tournament consolation championship.

But Wheaton Warrenville South had no intentions of providing the Blackhawks any post-holidays buffets.

The Tigers broke free from the only tie of the game at 2-2 and rode the all-around play of Riley O'Toole and the unlikely emergence of Luke Smedinghoff to a 50-43 DuPage Valley Conference victory Friday night in Aurora.

Smedinghoff drained three first-quarter 3 pointers, and O'Toole scored a game-high 17 points to spark the upset. Dan Hohenstein added 13 points for WW South.

Both teams are 2-2 in the conference; West Aurora is 8-5 overall and WW South 8-4.

"It was important for us to get what you would classify as a statement win," WW South coach Mike Healy said. "We have been up and down."

The Tigers harassed the Blackhawks into a 17-for-47 night from the field and allowed West Aurora only 24 points through three quarters.

Markus Cocroft led West Aurora with 14 points, 6 assists and 2 steals.
