Volo man denies role in heroin overdose death
A Volo man pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges he provided the heroin that led to the overdose death of a 19-year-old Lake Zurich woman.
Sean Campbell, 21, faces a mandatory prison sentence of 6 to 30 years if convicted of drug-induced homicide.
Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Scott Hoffert said Kelly Gawron was found unresponsive in her bedroom by her father about 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 5, and paramedics were unable to revive her.
An autopsy later determined Gawron had died of a heroin overdose, and police found empty capsules with white powder residue inside her bedroom.
Police determined Gawron had accompanied Campbell and another man on a trip to Chicago the night before her death. Campbell, of 102 Terra Firma Lane, had driven the group to a location where he bought four capsules of heroin for $40, and gave two to Gawron.
Police said Campbell told them Gawron inhaled the contents of one capsule on the ride back from Chicago, and he believed she used the second capsule after they arrived at her home.
Circuit Judge Fred Foreman scheduled a trial of the case for Feb. 17 and ordered Campbell, who is held on $1 million bond, to appear in court Jan. 27.
