Kane sheriff's police say Geneva teen hid fugitive
A Geneva teen was charged Wednesday with concealing a fugitive who eluded police in a December traffic stop.
Deisi Melchor, 17, also faces charges of obstructing justice and marijuana manufacturing or delivery, according to the Kane County Sheriff's Department.
Melchor was arrested about 4 p.m. Tuesday at a store in St. Charles along with Joseph M. Nathan, 19, also of Geneva, who was wanted on forgery, theft, drug paraphernalia possession, marijuana possession and property damage charges.
Police say Nathan fled a Dec. 18 traffic stop in Geneva Township, leaving his passenger, Melchor, behind.
Melchor, police said, initially claimed she didn't know Nathan very well but allowed him to drive her mother's car because she had a "leg cramp."
She maintained that story even after footprints in the snow led from the scene directly to a residence where Melchor and the vehicle later were found, according to police.
Melchor faces one to three years in prison or probation if convicted. It was unclear Wednesday if Nathan would face additional charges stemming from the traffic stop, Sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler said. Further information on Melchor's drug charge was unavailable.
Melchor, of the 1800 block of Eldorado Drive, was released without bail Tuesday and is due in court Jan. 20.
Nathan, of the 900 block of Marion Avenue, remained in the county jail Wednesday with bail set at $31,000.
