Don't forget about Native Americans
While I greatly enjoy reading the Daily Herald, I often feel something missing.
Today I see mention of the anniversary of the battle at Wounded Knee, but, being an AP release, it sounds like a straightforward military action, with no mention of women and children massacred, shot by soldiers while trying to flee.
I felt a similar twinge at Thanksgiving, reading an excellent article on how different ethnic groups celebrate the holiday.
Did no one at the paper think to ask a Native American family or organization? Did someone ask and perhaps get a negative response about the situation?
Many persons of tribal descent have mixed feelings about the holiday. A little Internet research will quickly show why.
I encourage your writers to dig a little deeper on this subject. Until our country acknowledges the full truth of our history, the brutality directed against its indigenous peoples, we will remain a nation built on treachery, and those who would continue that evil will find an easier time of it.
Just as Thanksgiving is credited to our native peoples, our democracy owes a similar debt.
The moniker "Indian" is credited to Columbus referring to these people as living "in dies," meaning with God.
