Outdated laws defy fairness, logic

There's a lot of wisdom in your editorial on Winners, Losers, and the CN merger, i.e., the lesson from the Bartlett balefill of, "Never give up." I hope this is not lost on the people of Barrington and other communities unfairly harmed by this deal.

Your editorial, however, seems to emphasize the polarization of local communities as the major issue. What about CN who stands to reap huge profits? They can do this because of outdated laws that make railroads pay no more than 15 percent of the cost of remediation - regardless of how much money they make on the deal.

We must find ways to bring back both logic and fairness to deals like the CN merger, and this can't be done just by avoiding polarization at the local level.
