Elgin man stabbed with steak knife

A 42-year-old man was stabbed twice in an apartment on Elgin's west side Monday morning after an argument over a woman, police said.

Police were called to an apartment in the 500 block of Locust Street at about 10:48 a.m. for a report of a fight.

Elgin Deputy Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said the victim sustained wounds on his left side and right shoulder and was taken to Sherman Hospital.

The wounds, inflicted by a steak knife, were not life-threatening and the victim was expected to be released the same day, Swoboda said.

Swoboda said police were still searching for the attacker.

"We have identified a suspect and we are currently looking for him," Swoboda said. "This was a fight between two people who knew each other."

The fight occurred on the floor of a home that was converted into four apartment units.

Saul Mendoza, who lived in an apartment next to the victim's, said he did not hear anything unusual or any fighting before police arrived.
