A simple tale of kindness, gratitude

"Love thy neighbor!"

"The good you do for others will be returned to you multiplied!"

Where have you heard that advice before? Your parents? Sunday school? Did you grow up hearing these phrases repeatedly?

You grow up and slowly learn through your own experience - it is all true!

We are two seniors in our mid-80s - very happy and content - living in Barrington for many years.

Our latest experience concerns an unexpected trip to the emergency room at Good Shepherd Hospital. After three days and two nights treating a heart condition, we were very happy to be returning home Sunday afternoon - it had already started to snow, blowing and very bitter cold.

As we pulled into our driveway, we were so happy and amazed to see our next-door neighbor, Todd Huddlestun and two of his helpers, doing the final fall cleanup on our property. Todd is a very talented landscape designer, very busy, but he has helped us so many times. Thank you, Todd.

The next morning, the ground was covered with snow, and at 6:30 a.m. we were awakened to the sound of a snowblower in our driveway. It was our other adjacent neighbor, Curt Wilson, cleaning the snow - as he has done for us many, many years.

Curt is a very successful entrepreneur, travels the world (he just returned from a trip to China), and doesn't need to be concerned with his elderly neighbors and their driveway. His two sons are being raised with the same principles.

None of our neighbors knew of our dire emergency, it happened in the middle of the night and we didn't have time to contact anyone.

We are aware that we cannot continue to live independently at our advanced age and we are endeavoring to make the appropriate plans for our future needs.

In the meantime, we want everyone to know how wonderful is living in Barrington and the really extraordinary people you can have as your neighbors.
