Angel Drill Team to perform in inaugural parade
Broomsticks initially substituted for rifles, but over four decades, the Angel Drill Team has honed a tradition of excellence in competition.
The many subsequent deluge of awards and accolades have been a source of pride. But the highlight in this long history is destined to be participation Jan. 20 in the 56th Presidential Inaugural parade in Washington, D.C.
"We've performed all over the country - Disney World, Six Flags, aboard Navy ships. Everywhere. But this is a classic," said retired Navy Chief Nathaniel Hamilton, who organized the group in 1967.
The team is comprised of 26 girls ages 9 to 18 who specialize in military exhibition drills with rifles. Headquarters and training are in North Chicago, but members come from several neighboring communities, including Gurnee, Beach Park, Waukegan and Zion.
In all his travels, Hamilton had never applied for a spot in an inaugural parade. But this year was different, he said.
"It's such a historical event. It's something you just can't miss."
Still, he never thought the Angels would be selected and was elated when after a week of correspondence, the official approval came from the Presidential Inaugural Committee.
"This Inaugural Parade will celebrate our common values and reflects the diversity and history of our great nation," wrote Peter Gage, parade director.
"We had a record number of applicants, so your selection is a testament to your organization's talent and enthusiasm. Your participation will help make this Inauguration truly historic."
There is the not so small matter travel and lodging expenses for the team and chaperones, however. Hamilton, a former Navy drill team instructor, estimates the cost at between $13,000 and $15,000.
"We're staying two hours away in Pennsylvania," he said. "That's the closest we could get. The prices in D.C. and Baltimore are so high we couldn't afford it."
The word is getting out. The Lake County Chamber of Commerce, for example, has asked its members to make an investment in the youth of Lake County.
"Part of what chambers do besides promoting businesses is promoting the community," said B. Dwight Houchins, chamber president.
