Northwestern falls short at Penn State in Big Ten lid lifter

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Talor Battle scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Penn State past Northwestern 61-57 on Tuesday in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Stanley Pringle added 14 points and hit two free throws with 3.9 seconds left to seal the win for Penn State (12-2, 1-0 Big Ten).

Battle scored 19 points in the second half, including eight during a span of just over a minute. Battle, who leads the Big Ten in scoring, hit a 3-pointer with 11:55 remaining to help cold-shooting Penn State tie the game 36-36.

The Nittany Lions shot a season-low 31 percent from the field for the game.

Freshman John Shurna led Northwestern (8-3, 0-1) with 16 points. Craig Moore and Kevin Coble each added 11 for the Wildcats.
