Waukegan beach ready for Polar Plunge
Many brave souls are preparing to return to Waukegan Municipal Beach on Thursday as part of what has become a New Year's Day ritual.
That's when hundreds of people will dash into the chilly Lake Michigan waters, many doing so with a touch of flair as part of the Waukegan Polar Bear Plunge.
Some dress as Elvis, or the Blues Brothers; others as the expected Baby New Year or Father Time.
"One group of sunbathers went out and laid out in the sun with bikinis and reflectors," said David Motley, Waukegan's director of public relations and marketing.
And with that come many spectators who want to see what crazy costumes will be worn.
The 10th annual event returns at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Waukegan Municipal Beach, 201 Sea Horse Drive. Temperatures are predicted in the mid-30s, with snow possible and south winds of 10 to 20 mph.
The Waukegan Polar Bear Plunge was established in January 2000 by the city and park district when more than 250 participants took the frigid New Year's Day dip.
"We had no idea it was a lasting and memorable event. It's a signature event for Waukegan," Motley said.
In 2008, more than 500 participants took the challenge to jump in the lake. Another 1,000 spectators endured the winter weather to cheer on the willing.
On-site registration begins at 9 a.m., and the cost is $15. Heated men's and women's changing tents will be provided along with free refreshments for participants. The first 500 registered participants will receive a Polar Bear Plunge sweatshirt.
Proceeds will benefit the Special Recreation Services of Northern Lake County to help local special needs athletes. The money goes toward uniforms, equipment and costs for entry fees and travel expenses.
