Nebraska murder suspect waives extradition from Illinois

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. -- The man suspected of smothering a Nebraska woman to death with a pillow has waived extradition from Illinois and is expected to make his first court appearance in Otoe County on Monday.

State Patrol spokesman Mike Meyer said Tuesday that 44-year-old Ronald Smith would be brought back to Nebraska from Collinsville, Ill., but details of his travel couldn't be disclosed for security reasons.

Smith is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 51-year-old Terri Harris, whose body was found in the home she shared with Smith on Christmas Day. Authorities believe Smith killed her during an argument two days earlier.

Court documents allege Smith fled to southern Illinois after the murder. He was taken into custody Saturday after a standoff with police at a Collinsville motel.
