Lake County roundup: LZ looks sharp at Pekin
A nearly two-week layoff didn't affect Lake Zurich's boys basketball team.
Brandon Kunz posted 19 points and 5 rebounds, as the Bears opened the Pekin Insurance Holiday Tournament with a 60-52 win over Boylan on Monday.
Lake Zurich (5-4) was playing its first game since a 13-point loss to Prospect on Dec. 16.
Showing no apparent signs of rust, the Bears jumped out to a 19-11 lead after one quarter and extended their margin to 35-22 by halftime.
Connor Mooney (two 3-pointers) and Danny Coleman added 15 and 13 points, respectively, for Lake Zurich, which plays Richwoods at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Bishop McNamara 67, Grayslake Central 50: At Normal West, playing their second game of the day in the State Farm Holiday Classic's third-place game of the consolation bracket, the Rams led 17-12 after one quarter.
But they then got outscored 16-9 in the second quarter, 18-11 in the third and 21-13 in the fourth.
Alex Anderson scored a game-best 16 points for Grayslake Central (8-5, 1-3). Kevin O'Rourke tossed in 13 for the Rams, who played with starting point guard Mike Brumm.
Quincy Notre Dame 59, Grayslake Central 44: At Normal West, in their first game of the day, the Rams were outscored 21-6 in the fourth quarter, after the State Farm Holiday Classic contest was tied 38-38 after three.
Mike Brumm led Grayslake Central with a game-high 18 points. He sank three 3-pointers, as did teammate Aaron Snyder (11 points).
