D-C's spurts too much for sputtering Bison

A 13-point first-quarter run was a good start for Dundee-Crown on Friday at the 34th annual Elgin Holiday boys basketball tournament.

A 17-point run that bridged the third and fourth quarters was an even better way to finish off Buffalo Grove as the Chargers rolled to a 62-38 victory at Chesbrough Fieldhouse.

"This morning at the shootaround I told a couple of players I wanted to step up a little bit," said D-C senior guard Marcus Henry, who scored 9 of his game-high 15 points in the initial run. "We wanted to make a statement in this tournament.

"The intensity was there. We just wanted to win."

It showed as D-C (7-2) also got 14 second-half points off the bench from 6-foot-6 senior Charles Kimbrough and 10 points from Jeff Beck.

Kimbrough scored 8 points in the run that put the Chargers up 47-23. They'll play at 5 p.m. for fifth place against Glenbard East.

"I was really proud of our guys for that," D-C coach Lance Huber said after BG closed within 27-21 in the third quarter. "Today I thought we did a better job of being able to build on the momentum we had instead of letting them come back to the ballgame."

Huber also thought senior Greg McNally's play off the bench helped the Chargers do "a lot of simple things that win ballgames."

D-C shot 50 percent from the field (24-for-48). BG (9-3) never recovered from missing 13 of its first 14 shots and committing half of its 18 turnovers to fall behind 13-4.

Kevin Mulligan had 11 points and Andrew Cohler and John Angotti added 8 apiece as the Bison shot 25.5 percent (14-for-55) from the field and 1-for-17 on 3-pointers.

"We're having a hard time finding five guys who play hard at the same time," said BG coach Ryan O'Connor. "The opportunities are there for kids to step up and we're still looking for a couple of kids to do that."
