Icy roads no problem in Tri-Cities

Sunlight and increasingly rising temperatures helped ease concerns of slippery roads Friday morning as the sun rose after a night of accidents and black ice on the region's busiest highways.

Unlike many other northern Illinois locations, the Tri-Cities area had no notable pileups to mark the day as St. Charles and other local police departments reported few problems, but urged ongoing caution for motorists throughout the day.

"It seems like we go in streaks," said Campton Hills Police Chief Greg Anderson. He noted local drivers seemed to be handling the icy roads with ease so far.

Kane County had a few minor crashes and a couple vehicles skidding into ditches on the south end of the county, but Lt. Pat Gengler of the sheriff's department said it was an uneventful morning.

"I think we got lucky with Christmas being on a Thursday," he said. "Had this been a normal Friday rush hour, it probably would have been worse."

Geneva police reported there were about six minor traffic accidents early Friday due to icy road conditions. Commander Eric Passarelli said there was damage to vehicles but no injuries.

"It helped that traffic was light," he said.

Batavia police reported there were two minor accidents early Friday, with no injuries.

A spokesman for the Elburn police department said no accidents were reported.
