Three candidates to vie for Villa Park president

A three-way race is developing for the Villa Park village presidency, which is up for election in the spring.

Two sitting trustees, Tom Cullerton and Albert Bulthuis, have announced their intentions for the position. Village President Joyce Stupegia also has confirmed her plans to seek re-election.

"There are lots of plans in the works. I'd like to see them and be part of their completion," Stupegia said. "I have the experience."

Stupegia, who is in her first term as village president, was a trustee for more than a decade in addition to involvement in village commissions and civic groups.

Cullerton, who was first elected in 2005, also said he wants to see projects completed, including the train-oriented development, the comprehensive plan update and the opening of the off-track betting facility.

"It's time for the next generation to step up and take more active role in guiding the future of the village. That's what I'm doing," said Cullerton, who also volunteers with numerous community groups. "I continually try to find ways to improve the town ... the quality of life for residents."

Bulthuis, who was elected in spring 2007, wants to use his business expertise to guide the village.

As trustee, he's been vocal in the comprehensive plan update and on a Crime Free program to improve rental properties and reduce crime. He previously served on the village's liquor commission and traffic and safety panel.

"I see challenges coming up that I think I'm the best one to handle," said Bulthuis, who owned a construction supply firm for 28 years. "I've lived through deep recessions and worked through them."
