Plane lands safely after reporting problems

A United jet arriving at O'Hare International Airport from California landed safely late Wednesday after reporting mechanical problems while in flight.

Emergency crews -- some of which were at O'Hare just hours earlier when an American flight skidded off the runway -- were called in to stand by as flight 766 from Santa Ana began its approach at about 9 p.m.

The United plane, which was carrying about 150 people, ended up landing safely. Passengers were still on board at 10 p.m. as officials checked the aircraft to make sure it was safe. No injuries were reported, a Chicago Fire Department official said.

It wasn't immediately clear if the aircraft was cleared for its next flight.

Earlier Christmas Eve, an American flight bound for Washington, D.C. skidded off the runway onto an unpaved area as it was making a turn prior to takeoff. No one was injured in that incident, either. Travelers were bused back to the terminal.
