From the military

• Navy Airman Apprentice Glory R. Peak, daughter of Tracie L. and Walter E. Robertson of Zion, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training and was meritoriously promoted to her current rank at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes.

During the eight-week program, Peak completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations." This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly "Navy" flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor in today's U.S. Navy.

Peak is a 2008 graduate of Zion Benton Township High School in Zion.

• Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Sean M. Gilligan, brother of James A. Gilligan of Great Lakes, recently completed the Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit course at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, Goose Creek, S. C.

Gilligan received instruction about nuclear theory, chemistry, physics, reactor operations, safety and security. Upon completion of the course, Gilligan was designated a nuclear power operator.

Gilligan is a 2007 graduate of New Smyrna Beach High School of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. and joined the Navy in July 2007.
