Why do we subject ourselves to this miserable weather?
Killer cold has plunged us into the deep freeze again. And that's after more than a foot of snow buried the suburbs last week. Wind chills nearing 40 degrees below zero have our eyes tearing up and our toes going numb. It's winter in Chicago.
Getting whipped by bone-chilling winds, shoveling pounds of snow and sloshing through mucky slush is just part of life in northern Illinois. We deal with it and look forward to spring training.
But not just get out? Move to Arizona or Florida or Hawaii. We asked that question to people all over the suburbs. Here is how they responded.
Kevin Nolan, Gurnee
"I actually moved up here to be colder. I lived in St. Louis. It's too hot and humid down there in the summer. I don't mind the winters here and I actually like to shovel."
Luis Magan, Wheeling
"I love it here. I was born in Mexico in the land of the sun, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I love the snow."
Ron Mikos, Buffalo Grove
"We really only get a couple of weeks of really bad weather in the winter. It's tolerable. I love the change of seasons and would miss that."
Emmy Ward, Mettawa
"I actually like winter. I like driving in the snow, playing in the snow, I don't mind it at all. We vacation in Florida, but I'd rather be here."
Jeff Perry, Wheaton
"I am not very happy about the snow. My Penske moving truck won't start. My personal vehicle won't start. I can't feel my toes. I can't feel my fingers. I am not used to this at all! So, other than that, we like this area a lot, but we're not very fond of the weather, that's for sure."
Craig Martin, Libertyville
"We are a hockey family. The colder the better. I don't mind it at all."
Larry Dwinell, Grayslake
"I like the seasons and the cold is something you just have to deal with. I take it stride and just wait for a warm day in spring."
Marjorie Morton, South Elgin
"Because it doesn't last for very long. Because as an optimistic relocated Midwesterner, you have to have faith that spring's coming and it's worth it for the other three seasons. You can live through it."
Brittany Wetzel, 19, Crystal Lake
"I love the snow, so that's what keeps me here."
Rick Temple, Lombard
"Chicago is a good, diverse community. I've lived other places but I always come back. It's home, and I don't mind the cold."
Linda Sorensen, St. Charles
"I was born here, so I've lived with the cold weather every year. I enjoy the changing of the seasons."
Mark Graver, St. Charles
"I just love the change of seasons. I lived in Arizona for awhile, I just like the grass here. What is Christmas without snow?"
Bill Cason, Arlington Heights
"I am like a tulip. If I don't get frozen for part of the year, I won't bloom."
