Impeachment panel breaks; no word from prosecutor
SPRINGFIELD -- The committee studying impeachment of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has ended its work for the week with no word on how deeply it can look into criminal charges against the governor.
Committee members say they won't do anything that might complicate the investigation by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald. So the committee last week asked Fitzgerald for guidance on what it should and shouldn't do.
Committee members plan to meet again Dec. 29.
Blagojevich's attorney, Ed Genson, says he has a list of witnesses he wants to bring before the committee next week. He estimates he'll need a day to question them.
Committee members say they could finish their work and make a recommendation on impeachment during the first week of January.
