Dundee-Crown rolls at Elgin
Marcus Henry hit nothing but net. And the Dundee-Crown boys basketball team took off.
Henry's 3-pointer 41/2 minutes into Monday night's game against Rockford Guilford was the Chargers' first points. It also started a 24-0 run as D-C cruised to a 65-41 victory in the first round of the 34th Annual Pepsi/Daily Herald Elgin Holiday Tournament.
"I was looking for the bucket to warm us up a little bit," Henry said. "We got into a rythym and everyone fed off of that."
The Chargers (6-1) advance to play Hoffman Estates, which beat Elgin, at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
Guilford opened a 5-0 lead in the opening 4 minutes Monday as the Chargers struggled early. In the first 4 minutes, D-C was 0-for-3 from the field and conmmitted 2 turnovers.
Then Henry hit a wide-open 3-pointer. A Charles Kimbrough dunk tied the game at 5-5. Justin Strzelczyk nailed a 3-pointer, Jeff Beck had a layup and then Beck hit a 3-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer as D-C took a 13-5 lead into the second.
A Strzelczyk basket, a 3-pointer from Greg McNally and two 3-pointers from Robert Stupar in the first 2:40 of the second completed the 24-0 run and gave D-C a 24-5 advantage.
"That's my job, come in and spark the offense, hit a few threes," Stupar said. "It started going from there."
A driving layup from Guilford's Leandre Harmon, who had a team-high 18 points, ended the Chargers' run with 5:05 left in the first half.
The Chargers led 29-12 at halftime, with 21 points coming on 3-pointers, and the lead never fell below 13 in the second half.
Beck led D-C with 18 points. Stupar added 11 off the bench. Henry had 10 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.
"When you shoot it well, you look pretty good," Chargers coach Lance Huber said. "We shot it well, in the first half especially."
