Father, son died of smoke inhalation
GALESBURG -- Officials in central Illinois say a father and his young son died of smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning when their apartment was engulfed in flames early Tuesday.
Galesburg authorities are searching for the cause of the fire that killed 4-year-old Tyrice Price and D'Andre Price, 29. Three people escaped from an adjacent apartment.
Police say Sandra Gonzales, Tyrice Price's mother and D'Andre Price's fiancee, told officers that D'Andre was bedridden with a bad left leg.
Officials say the boy and his father were in a bedroom when Gonzales left at about 9:30 a.m. Police say she closed the bedroom door so the child wouldn't wander.
The fire was reported at 9:45 a.m. Thick smoke and fire slowed firefighters efforts to put out the blaze.
