Here's the lowdown on Cubs' new outfielder
Three quick things to know about outfielder Joey Gathright, who agreed to a one-year contract with the Cubs on Tuesday:
• He's never been much of a hitter, especially on the power side. But Gathright has been one of the fastest players in baseball since debuting with Tampa Bay in 2004.
The blazing speed has allowed Gathright to steal 78 bases in 105 career attempts, and it helps him cover more ground than most in the outfield while taking pressure off his subpar throwing arm.
• White Sox fans probably remember the Cubs' new pickup, and not in a good way.
During a miserable 2007 season, when the Sox were on the way to 90 losses, closer Bobby Jenks provided one of the few bright spots by recording 41 straight outs.
That tied a major-league record, but Gathright ended Jenks' streak when he dribbled a single to left field.
• Gathright is one of baseball's good guys, as Cubs fans will soon find out. He never received much media attention in Tampa Bay or Kansas City, but that should change when he arrives in Chicago.
