Durbin wrong at the right times
Recently, much has been said and written about how Rod Blagojevich has become an embarrassment to Illinois. Since we are already in an embarrassed state, it is appropriate to comment on Illinois' other embarrassment, Dick Durbin.
Recall that on Dec. 3, 2003 the Herald ran story quoting Sen. Durbin saying it would take Americans years to capture Saddam Hussein. He was captured the next day.
Two years later, in a speech on the Senate floor, he compared American soldiers stationed at Guantanamo Bay to participants of Pol Pot's killing fields, Nazi guards at WWII concentration camps and Soviets who ran the Gulag.
Just last month Sen. Durbin called for the prison sentence of George Ryan to be commuted after he has served less than a year of a 6-year sentence.
Truly embarrassing.
