Pingree Grove makes first drug bust

An unusual drug bust over the weekend has become a badge of honor for Pingree Grove police.

Police from the tiny village just west of Elgin made their first drug arrest Friday, Chief Carol Lussky confirmed today.

And it was one to remember.

Officers, with help from the Kane County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team, seized 74 cannabis plants in multiple stages of growth and more than five pounds of cannabis packaged in varying sizes, all from a home in the 800 block of Emerald Drive.

The home's occupant, Adam K. Theer, 21, was charged Saturday with unlawful production of cannabis, unlawful possession of cannabis and unlawful delivery of cannabis - all felonies.

Theer has no criminal record, just traffic citations, court documents show. But if convicted of the most serious charge, he faces between four and 15 years in prison or on probation.

Meanwhile, Lussky has mixed feelings about the department's first drug arrest.

"It's sad that there's drugs in Pingree Grove but it's also a reality that there's pretty much drugs everywhere," she said. "And we're very happy we can take positive action to get it out of Pingree Grove."

According to a news release, nearby residents had been complaining about suspicious activity around the house, located within the Cambridge Lakes subdivision.

Acting on a tip, Pingree Grove police secured the warrant necessary to search the house.

The investigation was Pingree Grove's own, said Lt. Pat Gengler, a spokesman with the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

County officers, who for decades responded to crime before Pingree Grove established its police force two years ago, only assisted during the drug search, Gengler said.

"Tell Pingree Grove good job," Gengler said. "Sounds like they got a good one for the first one."
