Need some free legal advice?

Free legal advice is just a phone call away this weekend in Kane County.

From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, attorneys from across the area are volunteering their time and skills for the Kane County Bar Association's Ask A Lawyer Day.

The free service is available by calling (630) 762-1900 and open to anyone with a legal question, said Jan Wade, the association's executive director.

"A lot of times, people just need to know what direction to take" with a legal matter, she said. "The, 'Where do we get started,' and 'What do we do first?' "

Over the last year, the previously annual Ask a Lawyer Day has been offered once a month in celebration of the association's 150th anniversary. This will be the final session of the year, Wade said, and the organization has not yet decided how frequently to offer it in 2009.

About 30 people phoned in each month this year, with question topics ranging from divorces and wills to child custody issues and traffic offenses. Wade said lawyers who volunteer have varying levels of experience and legal backgrounds, including family law and patent law, among others.

"They really enjoy that opportunity to give something back to the community," she said. "We encourage everyone to take advantage of this free service."

And no question is off limits.

"If they can't answer the question, if no one there has any experience in that particular issue, they will make every effort to refer (the caller) to someone who can," Wade said. "No question can go unanswered."
