Harper celebrates Kwanzaa Friday
It's difficult to find suburban events recognizing Kwanzaa, a weeklong worldwide holiday honoring African heritage. Bucking the trend is Harper College's Black Student Union, which will host its annual Kwanzaa Celebration and Talent Showcase from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12.
The campus will mark the holiday, actually observed Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, with poetry, singing and dancing. The evening will also feature an explanation of Kwanzaa and a reflection of the past year.
The event will take place in Room J143 of the Building J Theatre, Roselle and Algonquin roads, Palatine. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for children ages 7 to 11. Children 6 and under are admitted for free. All money will support academic scholarships for African-American students attending Harper.
