Volo man charged in OD death
Bond was set at $1 million Tuesday for a 21-year-old Volo man charged with supplying the heroin that led to the death of a Lake Zurich woman.
Sean Campbell faces a mandatory prison sentence of six to 30 years if convicted of drug-induced homicide.
Kelly Gawron, 19, was found unresponsive in her bed by her father about 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 5, and paramedics were unable to revive her.
Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Stephen Scheller said Lake Zurich police determined Gawron had accompanied Campbell and a 21-year-old Buffalo Grove man on a trip to Chicago the night before her death.
Campbell drove the group to a location where he purchased four capsules of heroin for $40, Scheller said, and he gave two of them to Gawron.
Campbell, of 102 Terra Firma Lane, later told police Gawron inhaled the heroin from one capsule as he was driving back to Lake County.
The Buffalo Grove man left the group before their arrival at Gawron's home, Scheller said, where Gawron and Campbell were joined by a 20-year-old Arlington Heights woman.
Scheller said Campbell told police Gawron went into the bathroom for what seemed to be an extended period of time at one point, and that he believed she inhaled the contents of the second capsule then.
Campbell said he left Gawron's home about 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 5, Scheller said, and asked her to call him in about 20 minutes because he did not believed she looked well.
Scheller said Campbell told police he drove to his girlfriend's house to spend the night and forgot about asking Gawron to call him.
An autopsy determined Gawron had died of a heroin overdose, Scheller said, and police found empty capsules with white powder residue inside Gawron's bedroom.
The capsules have been sent to the crime lab for testing, Scheller said.
Associate Judge Raymond Collins appointed the county's public defender's office to represent Campbell, and ordered him to appear in court Dec. 29.
