Officials: Commuters need to be cautious
Morning commuters should take extreme caution this morning due to high amounts of ice being reported on roadways throughout the Chicago area, authorities are reporting.
More than a dozen accidents have been reported since 6 a.m. in the suburbs. All are being blamed on black ice conditions due to snowfall amounts and freezing temperatures.
Accidents have been reported at Route 83 and Ogden Avenue in Hinsdale, Army Trail and Rohlwing roads in Addison, Route 45 and Route 22 in Lincolnshire, Route 59 and North Avenue in West Chicago, and Schaumburg and S. Sutton roads in Streamwood. In addition, black ice is causing spin outs and slowing traffic to a crawl at Route 14 in Cary over the Fox River bridge, police officials confirmed.
Snowfall accumulation from the winter weather Tuesday shows more precipitation was recorded in the northern counties, closer to the Wisconsin border.
About three inches hit the ground in Lake County and northern Cook County, whereas the rest of Cook County picked up between 1 inch and 2 inches. Between 2 inches and 3 inches were recorded in the western suburbs.
Meteorologists predict the weather will reach between 20 degrees and 25 degrees today with winds up to 10 miles an hour.
