Fire damages business in downtown Naperville
A Tuesday morning blaze at an asphalt company near Naperville's downtown Metra station caused more than $100,000 damage, authorities said.
No one was injured in the incident. Authorities said they believe the cause of the fire was accidental.
Firefighters were called just after 6 a.m. Tuesday to battle a structure fire at DuPage Asphalt Company, 420 Center St., near the Naperville Metra station.
When they arrived, smoke was coming from the one-story metal building the asphalt company uses as a workshop and storage area.
Because the building was locked and the exact location of the fire was unknown, firefighters had to cut holes in overhead doors and the sides of the building to gain entry, Acting Fire Chief Mike Zywanski said. He said a captain with the department was able to estimate the fire's location based on the volume of smoke and point a hose stream onto it from one of the holes.
Authorities believe the fire started in a truck parked inside the building.
Zywanski said firefighters believe something in the cab portion of the truck caught on fire, but authorities have not identified the exact cause.
"We're pretty sure it's accidental," he said.
Crews spent about 20 minutes putting out the fire and remained on the scene for more than an hour.
Damage to the building and its contents still is being assessed but is expected to exceed $100,000, not including the truck.
Still, the building was deemed "habitable with repairs required" by the city's transportation, engineering and development department.
