Pekin mayor in critical condition

PEKIN -- The mayor of the central Illinois community of Pekin is in a medically induced coma after contracting a rare infection while recovering from a heart attack.

Mayor Dave Tebben's daughter says he's in critical condition at a Peoria hospital and has been in the coma for several days.

Shannon Tebben-Sandoval said Monday night at City Hall that her father has a rare fungal infection.

The 62-year-old Tebben had a heart attack at home on Nov. 1 and had the first of two heart surgeries. The second surgery, an eight-hour triple bypass, was Nov. 16.

About two weeks later, surgeons removed his gall bladder after it became infected.

Friends and family say Tebben had been recovering well before the recent setback.
